Lawrence Stands with Standing Rock
During the fall of 2016 and winter of 2017, thousands were gathered on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota. A group of young people from various organizations in Lawrence, KS decided to organize a solidarity march that would take place on Friday, September 30th, 2016.
KU’s First Nations Student Association asked if I would create a piece to represent the movement and get the word out about the march. The red and the arrows represent the warriors fighting on the front lines and in their own communities. The snakeskin pattern symbolizes the destructive pipeline carrying crude oil. The woman represents the many women leading the charge to protect our waters. The tipis behind the woman are taken from the tribal flag of the Standing Rock Hunkpapa Nation.
I had a couple hundred t-shirts printed for the event, which sold out within the first 30 minutes, raising over two thousand dollars for the camps and legal funds in Standing Rock.
